The Appeals Division handles direct appeals for indigent citizens who were convicted of a crime and sentenced in Marion County. Prior to 1997, the Appeals division consisted entirely of contract attorneys. In 1997, the Public Defender Agency began the process of establishing a full-time appeals division by hiring an Appellate Administrator (now called Division Chief). Since that time, the Agency has expanded its appeals division to fourteen full-time staff which includes the Division Chief, nine full time attorneys, an investigative paralegal, a records clerk, a paralegal and a secretary/receptionist .
The remainder of the division is made up of 35 contractual attorneys who are assigned appeal cases on a rotational basis. If you are a client and need to know who is handling your appeal, you should contact the Appeals Office. If you want to know the status of your appeal, please contact your assigned Appeals Attorneys directly.
