The Mayor’s Advisory Council on Disability completes its work through the efforts of the Events Committee and the Communications Committee. Want to know how you can become involved? Membership on a committee is not restricted to council members, and community participation is welcomed and appreciated. Events Committee

  • The Events Committee is responsible for planning, organizing and managing the Advisory Council’s community activities. Each July, the committee hosts the Mayor’s Access & Inclusion Awards Celebration in honor the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ceremony recognizes individuals and organizations promoting inclusion in Indianapolis. In addition to planning and orchestrating the details of this public celebration, the committee also recruits local community service providers to showcase their organizations’ services at booths throughout the event. While the Access & Inclusion Awards takes a great deal of focus, the Events Committee also plans other events throughout the year as additional priorities are identified.

Communications Committee

  • The Communications Committee is responsible for drafting information pieces that promote the mission of the council, including the creation of "Comfort Zone: Understanding Disability Culture," a video describing disability culture through the voices of local residents with disabilities. In addition, the Communications Committee is responsible for creating and updating flyers focusing upon topics such as Disability Etiquette and Emergency Planning. In addition to these efforts, the Committee also identifies content and updates for these Advisory Council webpages.
