Office of Equal Opportunity

Chapter 581 of the Revised Code of the Consolidated City of Indianapolis/Marion County, Indiana, as enforced by the Office of Equal Opportunity, prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, education, and public accommodation on the basis of a person’s race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, or United States military service veteran status.

At the direction of the Honorable Gregory Ballard, May, the Office of Equal Opportunity was transferred to the Office of Corporation Counsel to reduce a backlog of hundreds of discrimination claims which dated back to 2002.  As a result, the Office of Equal Opportunity worked diligently to eliminate the backlog of cases.  Now, the Office of Equal Opportunity promptly investigates all claims filed with its Office.

The Office of Equal Opportunity fairly investigates claims of discrimination within Marion County, Indiana to determine whether there is reasonable cause to believe discrimination occurred.  If the investigation finds that an entity has violated the law, action is initiated to stop the discrimination.

If you believe you have been discriminated against, please contact the Office of Equal Opportunity at (317) 327-4055 to schedule an intake interview, or feel free to visit the Office of Equal Opportunity in Suite 1601 of the City-County Building located at 200 East Washington during its office hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Intake interviews are conducted Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you are employed by an employer located outside the territorial limits of Marion County, Indiana, the City of Indianapolis, the State of Indiana, the United States government, or any of their agencies, the Office of Equal Opportunity is not able to accept your claim of discrimination.  However, you may seek relief with the Indiana Civil Rights Commission or the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity.
