TOWING LICENSING
Background

In July 2011, the City-County Council approved a new ordinance, Chapter 995 of the Revised Code for the Consolidated City of Indianapolis and Marion County, empowering the License Administrator and the Department of Code Enforcement to issue a license to qualified towing companies. This ordinance also creates several requirements and regulations designed to end the practice of predatory towing in Indianapolis.

The Department of Code Enforcement began accepting applications for towing licenses on September 6, 2011.

Interstate Towing Refunds
In March 2012, the Office of City Prosecutor announced that it has entered into an Agreed Judgment with Interstate/Delaware and South Towing.  The Agreement mandates full restitution for vehicle owners unlawfully towed from the Indiana Avenue Parking lot, an amount estimated at more than Eighty Thousand Dollars ($80,000.00).  If you were a victim of an unlawful tow from the Lockefield Commons lot on Indiana Ave., click here to download a copy of the tow claim form.

Brief Overview
Only non-consensual towing businesses will be required to obtain a business license. Please read the summary of the ordinance to find out if your business needs a towing license and to find out more information about the new rules which towing companies must follow.
