Nuisance Abatement

Purpose:

The Nuisance Abatement section of the Department of Code Enforcement (DCE) oversees nuisance-related issues that impact the quality of life in the City of Indianapolis. The Nuisance Abatement section assists DCE inspection staff in the preparation of legal cases, undertakes initiatives for the prosecution of nuisance cases in cooperation with the Office of City Prosecutor, coordinates multi-agency sweeps, administers and acts as the city advocate at DCE administrative hearings, and administers the provisions of the Indiana Unsafe Building Law to ensure efficient and effective enforcement of the civil code of Indianapolis.

 

Nuisance Abatement Functions

Administrative Hearings- The goal of administrative hearings is to help expedite cases and relieve the burden on the court system.  Nuisance Abatement administers the followng administrative hearings:

Indiana Unsafe Building Law- The Department of Code Enforcement (DCE) is tasked with upholding the Indiana Unsafe Building Law for the City of Indianapolis.  DCE partners with the Housing Division of the Marion County Public Health Department through an Interlocal Agreement to perform inspections, maintain data, and conduct administrative hearings in relation to these laws.  For questions regarding the Unsafe Building Law, please call 327-3936.

Nuisance Initiatives-  The Nuisance Abatement section of DCE works closely with the Office of City Prosecutor to identify, research, and inspect businesses or property owners who are a nuisance to the City of Indianapolis. 

Multi-Agency Sweeps- The Nuisance Abatement section of DCE coordinates and plans multi-agency sweeps related to licensing, neighborhoods and nuisance properties/property owners.  For questions regarding sweeps, please call 327-3936.
