WEIGHTS & MEASURES
PURPOSE:
The Weights & Measures program seeks to ensure that consumers receive full measure when they purchase a product sold by weight, measure, or count, and that any statements on packaging which declares a weight or measure are accurate.

BACKGROUND:
Weights & Measures recently moved to the Inspections Division of the new Department of Coe Enforcement (DCE). DCE is evaluating the overall program, determining what inspections have been operating under the program, inspections that need to be integrated into the program, and transitioning the program from a paper-based operation to a computerized case management system.

INSPECTIONS:
The Weights & Measures program inspects businesses that sell products based on weight, measure, or count, such a grocery stores, pharmacies, shipping stores, parking garages, taxis, gas stations, oxygen supply stores, fabric stores, and jewelry stress. Inspections shall be done at least once in each year and a complete record of inspection reports must be kept.

Following an inspection, any scale, weight, measure, or weighing or measuring device that complies with the required standards should be sealed and marked by stamping the letters “Ind. S.”, meaning Indiana Standard, and the last two figures of the year. If scales, weights, measures, or weighing or measuring devices do not conform to legal standards, they may be red tagged by the inspector to be condemned until repaired. If scales, weights, measures, or weighing or measuring devices or parts thereof are found to be false or fraudulent, or cannot be made to conform to the legal standard, the devices shall be condemned and confiscated by the inspector.
