The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (BNS) is responsible for enforcing both the Indiana Unsafe Building Law (IndCode 36-7-9) and the Vacant Building Standards set forth by Chapter 537 of the Revised Code of the Consolidated City of Indianapolis and Marion County. Through our enforcement, BNS works with community members and property owners to abate unsightly and unsafe conditions in neighborhoods throughout Indianapolis, thus helping to protect the public welfare and safety of our community while stabilizing property values. BNS performs exterior inspections of vacant properties, maintains data pertaining to unsafe building cases and conducts administrative hearings pursuant to Indiana Code 36-7-9.
Hearings are held at the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services. Morning hearings begin at 9:00 AM, with sign-in beginning at 8:00 AM. Afternoon hearings begin at 1:00 PM, with sign-in beginning at 12:00 PM.
