The Basics: What's a Village?

A village is a compact area of varied businesses and residences built in a way that:

        • each helps the other to thrive, and
        • accommodates walking and cycling equally with the automobile, and
        • has a discernible identity.

In short, a village puts the 'place' back into marketplace!

Why a Village?

A Village offers . . .

  • More Choices.

What is needed for a thriving Village?

People. Employers need workers; businesses need customers. Plenty of people are necessary to work, shop, and live in and nearby a village for it to be economically successful.

Diversity. As people grow, their needs and wants change. Jobs, lifestyle, housing needs, recreational tastes, even our abilities change! A successful village meets those varying needs and desires by offering choices.

Design. People gravitate to what is attractive to them, unconsciously and consciously. In a village, the design of individual places also contributes and forges something larger -- a sense of place that is the village. Attention to how the individual places interrelate to each other can yield a distinct place that people want to go, live and work near.

How is a Village cultivated?

Profile the area. Information gathering fosters an understanding of the whole community and the full range of issues shaping its future.

Analyze trends & impacts. Exploring the emerging trends driving the community’s future and the forecasted strategic issues promotes greater foresight, and adds rigor and realism to the community’s vision.

Vision is born. Creating a Vision with public involvement articulates the community’s preferred future – a shared image of where it would like to be in the long-term future.

Action is taken. Accomplishing the Vision requires real steps to be taken, changes made, and commitment extended.
Identifying what to do and doing it serves as the community’s road map to move it in the direction of its future.

It all starts with YOU!

and YOUR participation!
