Ornithology = the study of birds, including their behavior, natural history, physiology, ecology, and identification.

The Ornithology Center building has a fascinating history, beginning as the private library of J.K. Lilly, and then becoming the Nature Center for Eagle Creek Park for over 30 years.  Reopening in fall of 2009, the building is now "all about the birds," featuring beautiful exhibits and programming focused on birds and birdwatching, as well as live bird of prey programs.

The OC also boasts the most spectacular view in Marion County from the bluff overlooking Eagle Creek Reservoir.  It is not uncommon to see Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Double-crested Cormorants, Grebes, Loons, and other amazing wildlife from the back observation window; creatures you would expect to see on a wilderness expedition living only minutes from downtown Indianapolis!

Raptor Feeding Time:  Saterdays at 2:30pm - Join a naturalist at the OC to watch us feed one or more of our live birds of prey. Feeding will only take a few minutes so make sure not to be late!

Meet a Raptor:  Sundays at 2:30pm - Join the OC staff to meet one of the educational birds of prey! Discover the world of birds!  Program topics could include bird hikes, "Meet a Raptor," backyard habitat, birding videos, and more!

Sunday Morning Birdwalk:  The Amos Butler Audubon Society leads a birdwalk every Sunday at 9am - meet at the deck next to the Ornithology Center.  During spring and fall warbler migration, the group may also meet at the Eagle Creek Marina.

Private Programs and Outreach: Learn about Indiana’s native birds and meet our live raptors through our Birds of Prey Programs and guided Nature Hikes. We offer a wide variety of program topics for all ages, including bird migration, nesting, habitats, conservation, identification, and more. Bring your group to the Ornithology Center or schedule an outreach program so we can come to you, starting at only $4 per person! Call today to set up your program!
