DescriptionMax Bahr Park was acquired in 1946 and sits on 10.11 acres of land. The park is named after Dr. Max Bahr, born in 1874 in Indianapolis and graduating as a doctor of psychological medicine from the University of Berlin in 1908. He began working at Central State Hospital in1898 and was appointed superintendent in 1923.
Bahr served in other posts within the psychiatric field as well, and was instrumental in de-stigmatizing the mentally ill. He was responsible for the facility's name change in 1927, changing from Central State Hospital for the Insane to Central State Hospital. He retired from Central State in March, 1952, and died of a heart attack in December of the same year. (Information from Indiana State Library, Indiana Biography Series.)
