Update - Public safety officers are saving family pets


INDIANAPOLIS – Animal Care & Control officers, with the assistance of the Indianapolis Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, went door-to-door in apartment communities severely damaged by Friday’s storm in search of lost family pets.

As the officers found pets, they were removed from the area and transported to the city animal shelter located at 2600 S. Harding St. to be fed and properly cared for, if the owner was not located.

Animal Care & Control officers were located at each of the three command posts. The following pet recovery results are reported:

Grand Total

  • 22 animals returned to owner
  • 17 animals transported to shelter

North Command – 38th/Mithoeffer

  • 9 animals recovered
  • 9 transported to shelter

South Command – Carson/Thompson

  • 28 animals recovered
  • 21 returned to owner
  • 7 transported to shelter

South Command – Madison/Southport

  • 1 animal recovered
  • 1 returned to owner

If a family pet is missing calls can be made to Indianapolis Animal Care & Control at 317.327.1397. However, descriptions of the same animal can vary from one person to the next; so don’t rely simply on a phone call to identify your pet visit the shelter as well. Shelter hours are:

Weekdays (excluding Wednesday): 10am-6pm
Wednesdays: 10am-7pm
Saturdays: 10am-4pm
Closed Sundays and holidays
