Mistreated puppy gets needed medical care from Animal Care & Control

INDIANAPOLIS – Animal Care & Control rescued an injured pet yesterday afternoon. A concerned Indianapolis resident called Animal Care & Control about an abandoned dog with a severely swollen, bloodied tail. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that a 4 month-old Chow mix had rubber bands tightly wrapped around its tail in an apparent effort to dock or remove the tail of the young dog.

Animal Care & Control located the owner and was told that neighborhood children put rubber bands around the dog’s tail and that he was going to take it to the vet on November 21st. After an Animal Control Officer stressed the animal’s need for immediate medical treatment, the owner told the officer to “take the damned dog.”

“We want to make it known that Animal Care & Control will not tolerate this kind of behavior and that in instances like this the owner will certainly be prosecuted. Pet ownership is a lifetime commitment, obviously one that this owner did not take very seriously,” said Administrator Jim Garrard.

“Peyton,“ the name given to the puppy by shelter staff, will be receiving medical treatment for his injury and once well enough, will be available for adoption at Indianapolis Animal Care & Control. If anyone is interested in adopting “Peyton” they can visit the shelter at 2600 S. Harding St. The shelter is open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm with extended hours on Wednesday until 7pm, and 10am-4pm on Saturday.
