Extreme Heat Wave Requires Special Pet Care

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care & Control reminds pet owners that proper care in the extreme heat the city is experiencing can make the difference between life and death for their pets.

"Summer can be very dangerous if you don't take extra steps to keep pets safe," said Leslie Fatum, IACC Administrator. "Many people simply aren't aware of the weather-related dangers to their pets, or how to provide necessary protection."

To be sure your pet stays healthy in the heat, follow these tips:

  • Make sure your pet always has plenty of water and access to shelter. If your pet will be outside all day, remember as the sun moves, the shade will move.
  • Check your pet's water supply several times each day, making sure the supply is fresh, clean and cool.
  • Bathing and grooming may make your pet more comfortable in the heat.
  • Never leave your pet in the car, even if the windows are cracked—this can be fatal. The temperature in a car, even with the windows cracked, can get very high very quickly.
  • Make sure walks aren't so long that your pet becomes exhausted or dehydrated. If your pet is panting excessively, it is time to rest and get some water.
  • Check your pet regularly for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. They carry diseases that can be transmitted to your pet and are more prominent in the summer. Be sure to keep any outdoor pets on heartworm preventative.
  • When using pesticides and lawn treatments, check the label to make sure the yard will remain safe for your pet. You may need to keep your pet inside for a certain period of time after the chemicals are used.
  • Pay attention to your pet's skin—some have allergies. Contact your vet if you see signs of skin irritation.
  • Only allow your pet to swim when supervised. Even the best swimmers can get into trouble.
  • Establish a relationship with a licensed veterinarian and ask questions about your pet's health.
