One of the most important steps a person or family can take in preparing for emergencies is to develop, practice and maintain a household disaster plan. Things to consider when developing this plan are:

  • Find out what types of disasters are most likely to happen in your area.
  • Request information on how to prepare for each type of disaster.
  • Learn about the community's warning signals: what they sound like and what you should do when you hear them.
  • Check on animal care after a disaster. Animals may not be allowed inside of shelters.
  • Find out about the disaster plans at your workplace, your children's school or daycare center or any other place where your family spends time.
