Officer John McKinney was shot late during the evening of March 28, 1912, at New York Street and Kealing Avenue during an on-duty quarrel with his partner. Taken to City Hospital, Officer McKinney died on March 31.
Officer McKinney's partner was arrested and charged with murder. He was found not guilty on September 16, 1912, at a trial that took place in Martinsville, Indiana.
Appointed to the police department in 1899, Officer McKinney was survived by his wife and three children.
