In August 2015, Mayor Greg Ballard appointed Dr. David Wantz Director of Public Safety of the City of Indianapolis.
Director Wantz is vice president for Government and Community Relations and special assistant to the President at the University of Indianapolis. He is also a tenured associate professor of psychology at the university.
Director Wantz began his career as a police officer in Harford County, MD before moving to Plainfield, IN where he taught at the Law Enforcement Academy. He spent 10 years on the Law Enforcement Training Board, and has also supervised the UIndy Police Department. Most recently he served on the IMPD Merit Board.
He received his Bachelor of Science in sociology from Milligan College, and Master of Business from UIndy. Director Wantz received his doctorate in counseling psychology from Indiana University.
Director Wantz travels widely as an accreditation expert with the Higher Learning Commission and the American Bar Association. He has served on a variety of not-for-profit boards including Spirit & Place and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
