Monthly River Monitoring
This program was implemented in May of 1991 to monitor the ambient quality of surface water passing through Marion County on a long-term basis, specifically in the West Fork of the White River and its tributaries. Samples were originally collected once a month at seventeen (17) locations, currently samples are collected once a month at twenty (20) Stations. Parameters analyzed include bacteria, conventional chemistry, metals, and organics. Field measurements are also recorded for Dissolved Oxygen, Specific Conductivity, Temperature, pH, weather conditions, flow and water appearance. These parameters, alone or in combination, have the potential to degrade the quality of surface waters, resulting in unpleasant odors and colors, impairment of resident biological life, and potential human health concerns. Analytical data from this program is used to determine background and evaluate the success of projects such as the CSO Long Term Control Plan, the Stormwater NPDES Permit, and other current and future projects.
