106th Street bridge demolition nearing completion;
Walsh starting construction of two new bridges

Walsh Construction Company plans to complete demolition of the 106th Street bridge over Interstate 69 on Monday night.  Work will require closing three right lanes of southbound I-69 and three left lanes of northbound I-69 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Crews will then begin construction of two new bridges over I-69 by driving steel piles to provide foundational support for the new bridges' abutments and center piers.  People in the area may hear recurring loud impact noises as the pile driving equipment pounds the long beams deep into the ground.
The speed limit near the construction zone at mile marker 204 is reduced to 55 mph and may be reduced further to 45 mph when workers are present.  Motorists are advised to pay attention to work zone warning signs and follow posted speed limits.  For more information about safe driving in highway construction zones, go to http://www.in.gov/indot/2356.htm.

About the project

INDOT awarded a $21.7 million contract to Walsh Construction Company to build a two-lane, oval-shaped roundabout on 106th Street over I-69 and ramps to and from both directions of the interstate.  Two separate two-lane bridges will each carry one direction of traffic. The bridge to carry westbound traffic on the north side of 106th Street is also designed to accommodate pedestrians.
The project is intended to reduce congestion at existing I-69 interchanges at 96th and 116th streets, increase traffic safety in the area and provide direct interstate access at 106th Street.  Direct access will serve existing residential and commercial destinations and accommodate development and population growth in the area.
Access on 106th Street over I-69 will remain closed during construction of the new interchange.  The new I-69 Exit 204 to 106th Street is scheduled to open before the end of this year.  For more information about the 106th Street interchange project, go to http://www.in.gov/indot/3399.htm.

Southbound construction starting on I-69 south of Exit 210

Interstate 69 from Exit 205 to Exit 210

Milestone Contractors plans to begin next week patching existing pavement on southbound Interstate 69 between Campus/Southeastern Parkway Exit 210 and State Road 37 Exit 205.
At the same time, Milestone will begin paving a new asphalt overlay on northbound lanes. Both operations are scheduled to begin on or after Wednesday, June 8 and will require overnight alternating lane restrictions from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. six nights a week on Monday through Saturday nights.
One lane of I-69 will remain open at all times, and two lanes will remain open during peak daytime travel times. The speed limit on I-69 through the work zone is reduced to 60 mph and further reduced to 50 mph when workers are present.
Scheduled to begin later this month, after existing pavement is resurfaced, crews will start work to rehabilitate interstate bridges. Traffic lanes between Exit 205 and Exit 210 will be shifted toward the outside shoulders to set temporary concrete barriers and begin construction of an additional travel lane in the median.

Campus/Southeastern Parkway Exit 210

Milestone is mobilizing cranes and other equipment at the Campus/Southeastern Parkway interchange, setting temporary concrete barrier along I-69 and driving piles for widening the bridge over I-69.  Steel piles are being driven into the ground to provide foundational support for the widened abutments and center pier.  People in the area may hear recurring loud impact noises as the pile driving equipment pounds the beams into the ground.
Exit 210 traffic is scheduled to be shifted for construction beginning after Independence Day (July 4).  The first phase of construction will begin building the new ramps and will prepare for shifting traffic into a double-crossover diamond configuration, which is intended to improve traffic flow during widening of the bridge deck and construction of the permanent interchange.

Governor Pence Joins INDOT and State and Local Officials to Kick Off Construction on $92 Million in I-69 Improvements

Major Moves 2020 Project to Widen 15 Miles, Redesign Exit 210

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today joined Senator Jim Merritt and local leaders from Fishers, Noblesville and Pendleton to officially kick off construction on a $92 million project to modernize Interstate 69 in Hamilton and Madison counties.
“Here in the Crossroads of America, we know that roads mean jobs,” said Governor Pence. “Along this section of I-69, we’ve seen tremendous economic development and it is vital that we modernize this portion of the highway to ensure continued economic growth. My administration has invested nearly $3 billion in roads and bridges across Indiana since I became governor, and I firmly believe that by continuing to invest in infrastructure, we can make Indiana the best place in America to start a business, grow a business and create jobs.”
The project, as part of the Governor’s Major Moves 2020 program, will widen 15 miles of Interstate 69 from State Road 37 in Fishers to State Road 38 in Pendleton. Also, the project will reconfigure I-69 Exit 210 at Campus/Southeastern Parkway into a double-crossover diamond.
Most highway maintenance activities and construction projects will halt work and pull back barriers and barricades to the safest extent possible for holiday weekend travel. Following Independence Day, Milestone Contractors will shift traffic to begin widening I-69 and build new ramps at Exit 210.
Governor’s Pence’s Major Moves 2020 program is widening and rehabilitating more than 40 miles of I-65 and I-69 in Indiana. This includes:
  • I-65 between from State Road 44 near Franklin to the Johnson/Marion county line,
  • I-65 from State Road 38 to State Road 26 near Lafayette in Tippecanoe County, and
  • I-65 between Sellersburg and Memphis in Clark County.
In December, I-65 south of U.S. 30 in Merrillville was added to the Major Moves 2020 program.
Four design-build teams are currently developing proposals to widen and modernize as much of I-65 as the $70 million project budget allows.

Southbound paving begins on I-69 Major Moves 2020

Plan for overnight lane closures between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Interstate 69 patching & paving

Milestone Contractors plans to begin tonight paving an asphalt overlay on southbound I-69 south of Campus/Southeastern Parkway (Exit 210) to State Road 37 (Exit 205).
Crews will also continue patching existing northbound pavement north of Exit 210.  The patching operation will continue north over the next several weeks to the end of the project limits, which is just past State Road 38 (Exit 219), before returning southbound on I-69 back to Exit 210.
Milestone is repairing pavement on about 15 miles of interstate before paving a new asphalt overlay on existing lanes.  Motorists may temporarily experience rough pavement after sections are patched and before sections are paved.
Weather permitting, patching and paving operations require alternating lane closures six nights a week on Monday through Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.  One lane of I-69 will remain open at all times, and two lanes will remain open during peak daytime travel times.
The speed limit on I-69 through the work zone is reduced to 60 mph and further reduced to 50 mph when workers are present.  Motorists should also be alert for trucks entering and exiting the highway through the construction zone.
After pavement is repaired and resurfaced, crews will start work to rehabilitate interstate bridges and build the additional travel lane.  Beginning soon after Independence Day (July 4), northbound and southbound I-69 traffic lanes between Exit 205 and Exit 210 will be shifted toward the outside shoulders to set temporary concrete barriers and begin construction of an additional travel lane in the median.

Campus/Southeastern Parkway Exit 210

Construction of the new interchange configuration is scheduled to begin after Independence Day (July 4).  Campus/Southeastern Parkway bridge construction will require overnight lane restrictions between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. starting on or after Wednesday, July 6.
The first phase will begin building the new ramps and will prepare for shifting traffic into a double-crossover diamond configuration later this summer, which is intended to improve traffic flow during widening of the bridge deck and construction of the permanent interchange improvements

About the project

INDOT and the Indiana Finance Authority (IFA) selected a $92 million proposal from Milestone Contractors and United Consulting to add a travel lane and rehabilitate 15 miles of I-69 in Hamilton and Madison counties as part of Indiana’s Major Moves 2020 program.  The project will:

$4.6 million project will modernize downtown I-65 bridges
Drivers should plan for overnight interstate closures

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a $4.6 million contract to Proshot Concrete for maintenance and modernization of the Interstate 65 bridges spanning the north side of downtown Indianapolis from Senate Avenue to Alabama Street.
Work is underway underneath the bridges, including patching concrete, painting steel and wrapping bridge piers with a fiber-reinforced plastic to protect and strengthen the structure.
Construction on the bridge decks above will significantly affect overnight traffic beginning in late September.  Specific dates and traffic closures will be announced in the near future.
During a maximum of 20 overnight closures, crews will seal joints between each bridge span to prevent moisture from penetrating and deteriorating the structures' concrete and steel.  Concrete pavement will also be repaired during the overnight closures.

Northbound I-65 closures

Work on northbound I-65 will CLOSE ALL LANES during weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.  The Exit 113 ramps to and from Pennsylvania and Meridian Streets will remain open while northbound I-65 is closed.  Advanced warning signs will direct through traffic - including large trucks - to take I-465 around Indianapolis.
During the overnight closures:
  • The northbound I-65 Exit 114 ramp to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street will close temporarily, and
  • The Pine Street entrance ramp to northbound I-65 will close temporarily.
After northbound interstate work is complete, night crews will close the northbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian and Pennsylvania streets to perform work on the ramps.

Southbound I-65 closures

Work on southbound I-65 will CLOSE ALL BUT ONE LANE during weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. One lane of southbound I-65 and the southbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian Street will remain open during southbound I-65 construction.  Advanced warning signs will direct through traffic - including large trucks - to take I-465 around Indianapolis.
During the overnight lane closures, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street entrance ramp to southbound I-65 will close.
After southbound interstate work is complete, night crews will close the southbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian Street to perform work on the ramps.

Taking care of what we have

Bridge work on I-65 north of downtown Indianapolis is part of the approximately $850 million that INDOT is investing this year on more than 770 projects across Indiana, including rehabilitating or replacing 471 bridges.  These projects will bolster Indiana's improving pavement and bridge conditions.
Since 2013, INDOT-maintained bridges rated as fair or better have increased from 93 percent to 95.3 percent, above last year's national average of 94 percent. For more information about INDOT's efforts to modernize Indiana's roads and bridges, go to http://www.in.gov/indot/3371.htm

Watch for Deer on Indiana’s Roadways
Tips for avoiding deer-vehicle crashes

The Indiana Department of Transportation, the Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources remind drivers to stay alert as deer become more active in fall months on Indiana’s roadways.
Nearly 50 percent of all vehicle crashes involving deer occur between October and December.  Deer are generally more active during mating season in late October into early November. And with many farmers harvesting crops, deer could be on the move at any time, encountering roads more frequently and increasing the potential for collisions.
Across the state in 2015, there were more than 15,000 deer-related collisions, including vehicles crashing attempting to avoid striking a deer.
With the increased number of deer heading toward the roadways, deer-vehicle crashes will happen, but drivers can take measures to keep collisions to a minimum. Knowing when deer are most active and practicing defensive driving will help reduce your chances of becoming a statistic:
  • Deer are most active between sunset and sunrise, especially in rural areas.
  • Deer often travel in groups. If you see one, others are likely nearby. Stay alert!
  • Pay special attention in areas where you have seen deer before and in areas near “Deer Crossing” warning signs.
  • Exercise caution along woodlot edges, at hills and blind turns.
  • Use high-beam headlights at night when there is no opposing traffic.
  • Scan for illuminated eyes and dark silhouettes near the side of or on the roadway.
  • If you see a deer, slow your speed drastically, even if the deer is far away.
  • NEVER swerve to avoid hitting a deer. More serious crashes occur when drivers try to miss a deer but hit something else.
  • Buckle up!
Studies have shown that novelties like deer whistles are ineffective in deterring deer. The best way to avoid an accident is to be alert.
Even when practicing safe driving, sometimes hitting a deer is inevitable. If a driver hits a deer, it is important to remain calm and do not touch the deer or approach it. Wounded deer are unpredictable and can be dangerous.  Drivers should pull off the road, remain in the vehicle and make sure everyone is safe.  Motorists involved in a collision are required to call the police and report a crash with at least $1,000 in property damage or if someone is injured.
To report a deer carcass on an interstate, U.S. highway or state road, contact one of INDOT’s six districts to report it. Find INDOT district contact information at http://indot.in.gov.

SB I-65 Shifts Thursday Night;
All Lanes To Open For Winter
JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to switch southbound Interstate 65 traffic between mile markers 88.5 and 94.0 in Johnson County to right and center lanes during overnight hours this Thursday (DECEMBER 1), weather permitting.  The third southbound I-65 lane should open to motorists approximately ten days later—opening all southbound lanes in advance of a winter construction hiatus.
INDOT officials say all three lanes of northbound I-65 are tentatively scheduled to be open to the motoring public during the second week of December.
Paving operations will resume in May-June to complete installation of the surface lift of steel slag/SMA asphalt in the south section of the project (between Whiteland Road and State Road 44).  Ramps at Main Street/Greenwood, Whiteland Road and S.R. 44/Franklin will also be milled and resurfaced in the spring of 2017—completing the state’s $84 million Major Moves 2020 added-lanes project on I-65 with full-depth pavement replacement between Greenwood and Franklin.
Milestone is the state’s prime contractor.

SB I-65 Moved Up To Tonight;
All Lanes To Open For Winter

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind.—Indiana Department of Transportation’s contractor will switch southbound Interstate 65 traffic between mile markers 88.5 and 94.0 in Johnson County to right and center lanes during overnight hours tonight (NOVEMBER 30).  This vacates the southbound counterflow lane on the northbound side.  This lane switch had previously been publicized to occur tomorrow night.
The third southbound I-65 lane should open to motorists during the second week of December.  Over the next two weeks, all three northbound I-65 lanes are scheduled to be opened to the motoring public as well.  This will provide unrestricted 6-lane traffic with a speed limit increasing to 70 mph— between mile markers 88.5 and 99.6—in advance of the winter construction hiatus.
Tomorrow night (DECEMBER 1), crews will remove barrier wall sections along northbound I-65 lanes and remove the median crossovers that facilitated traffic pattern changes in the south section of the project.  They will also repair a damaged bridge rail at Hurricane Creek and complete pipe work in the median area.

State Road 13 traffic shift TODAY at I-69

Construction contractors plan to shift both directions of traffic today into a permanent configuration on State Road 13 at the I-69 (Exit 214) interchange ramps.
Both directions of traffic on State Road 13 will be returned to the previous alignment on the southern half of the roadway. Traffic has been temporarily shifted as crews rebuilt the roadway. New traffic signals are also activated to regulate State Road 13 and the intersections of ramps to and from I-69.
Construction will continue in the area as Milestone Contractors widens the I-69 bridge over State Road 13 as part of the I-69 Major Moves 2020 project, which is adding a third lane in each direction to 15 miles of I-69 between State Road 37 and State Road 38.
