Indianapolis Traffic Restrictions Update

INDOT Reminds Motorists to Drive Safely

During Busy Memorial Day Weekend

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is reminding motorists to practice safe driving habits during the heavily traveled Memorial Day weekend. While INDOT has directed contractors to pull back barrels and barricades to the safest extent possible starting at noon on Friday, May 24, motorists should be informed of highway work zones that might be encountered on the way to the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and other destinations:

I-65 between State Road 32 (Exit 140) and Boone County Road 100 East (Exit 138) has two open lanes in each direction with a reduced work zone speed limit.
I-69 southbound between 116^th Street (Exit 205) and I-465 (Exit 200) has three narrowed lanes and a reduced work zone speed limit.
I-69 northbound approaching 116^th Street and State Road 37 (Exit 205) is restricted to two lanes and has a reduced work zone speed limit.
I-70 westbound between State Road 9 (Exit 104) and Mt. Comfort Road (Exit 96) is shifted to the right shoulder and has a reduced work zone speed limit.
I-70 west of State Road 267 has three pavement projects underway through Hendricks, Morgan and Putnam Counties. Watch for lane restrictions in these areas:

U.S. 40/State Road 46 (Exit 11) to State Road 59 (Exit 23)
Three miles west of State Road 243 (Exit 37) to U.S. 231 (Exit 41)
Little Point Road (Exit 51) to State Road 39 (Exit 59)

U.S. 31 between 146^th Street and 169^th Street in Hamilton County has a reduced work zone speed limit with two narrowed lanes in each direction shifted to the east side of the highway. Access at 161^st Street is closed, and access to 151^st Street west of U.S. 31 is closed. Access to 156^th Street west of U.S. 31 will close Friday, May 24.
U.S. 40/West Washington Street near High School Road has two lanes in each direction shifted to the north side of the highway. High School Road has one lane in each direction.
State Road 37 southbound between 126^th Street and I-69 is restricted to one lane and has a reduced work zone speed limit.

In order to maximize safety and mobility during the Memorial Day weekend, INDOT work zones will not have construction activities taking place. However, Indiana State Police will continue to enforce construction zone safety utilizing all available tools, including pickups in construction zones (PICZ). Indiana now has nine trucks patrolling various construction zones throughout the state, and state police will be providing visible PICZ enforcement throughout the holiday weekend.

Indiana State Police will be specifically looking for drivers who speed, follow too closely, make unsafe lane changes, drive aggressively and fail to buckle up or to properly restrain children. Troopers will also be aggressively looking for impaired drivers.

To help ensure motorists reach their destinations safely, please remember these safe driving tips:

Make sure you are well rested before traveling.
Avoid tailgating. Remember the two-second rule.
Obey posted speed limits, and always use turn signals when turning and making lane changes.
Make sure everyone is properly buckled up.
Never drink and drive. If you are going to consume alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver.

I-70 Pavement Repairs

Beginning Next Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to begin next week repairing pavement on I-70 west of I-65 (south split) to I-465.

E & B Paving, the state’s contractor for the $1.2 million pavement restoration project, will restrict the left and center lanes of westbound I-70 between mile markers 80 and 73 on Tuesday, May 28 beginning at 9 p.m. Lane restrictions are expected to end by 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 29.

On Friday, May 31 at 9 p.m., crews will again restrict the left and center lanes of westbound I-70 from I-65 (south split) west to I-465. The lanes are expected to remain closed until Sunday, June 2 at approximately 2 p.m. The extended restriction will allow new concrete adequate time to cure.

Weekend lane restrictions for pavement replacement and sealing are expected to continue for approximately two months. Repairs will be made to both eastbound and westbound I-70. Work is weather-dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of rain.

INDOT reminds drivers to be cautious and considerate when traveling through highway work zones. Be attentive to signs, message boards and work zone speed limits, as well as other drivers.

Concrete Pavement Repairs

Beginning Tuesday on I-65

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to begin work restoring nearly two miles of concrete pavement on I-65 tomorrow night.

Harper Company, the state’s contractor for the $693,000 project, will make repairs to both directions of I-65 between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street (Exit 117) and 38^th Street (Exit 119) beginning Tuesday, April 9 at 9:00 p.m.

Barring adverse weather, nightly lane restrictions should be expected Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews route and seal joints in the concrete. Concrete patching will be completed during weekend lane restrictions between Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The contract is expected to be complete by mid-July.
