Emergency Management

You count on the Department of Public Works for many essential services like garbage collection, snow removal and street repairs. But did you know that DPW is also responsible for helping to coordinate relief efforts during natural and man-made disasters? Just like we ready ourselves before any snowstorm, we are ready for any disaster.

Our department has put together an emergency support plan that outlines the steps we must take to restore vital public services to our residents.  For instance, DPW crew helped remove debris when tornadoes hit Indianapolis in May 2004.  This allowed city and state agencies to more easily assess the damage caused by the storm, which helped the community return to normal more quickly.

Sandbags for Flood

The winter of 2004 was another example of how our strategic emergency plan was called into action. After numerous manhole explosions rocked Downtown, DPW workers went underground to ensure that the city's infrastructure was not adversely affected.

Whether its cleaning up after a parade or making our water potable after a natural disaster, DPW takes great pride in knowing that we are prepared for whatever comes our way.
