I-465 Westside Traffic Pattern Changes to Take Effect Friday
New temporary express lane will be in northbound and southbound lanes
INDIANAPOLIS – Prior to the morning rush hour on Friday, August 27, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) anticipates shifting traffic to a new pattern on I-465 on the city’s west side. This new traffic pattern includes a temporary inside/left northbound 4.5 mile express lane, an innovative tool to minimize impact on this heavily traveled corridor between the Sam Jones Expressway and I-74/Crawfordsville Road.
Before traffic can be shifted, contractors will be striping the new lanes overnight Wednesday, August 25. Barrels will be in place to guide motorists. Crews will also be working Thursday to Saturday to move a concrete barrier wall in this work zone. Motorists in the express lane will not have access to U.S. 40/Washington Street, U.S. 36/Rockville Road and 10th Street. Traffic entering I-465 northbound from these interchanges and the entrance ramp from westbound Sam Jones Expressway to northbound I-465 will not have access to the express lane. The next available exit traveling northbound will be I-74/Crawfordsville Road.
Additionally, a temporary southbound express lane is anticipated to be in place by September 3. Crews will work a few days prior to this date to prepare for this traffic lane shift. Overnight lane closures and slow moving traffic are to be expected. Like the northbound express lane, motorists will not have access to U.S. 40/Washington Street, U.S. 36/Rockville Road and 10th Street, nor Sam Jones Expressway and I-70 east. The next available exit traveling southbound will be S.R. 67.
Large trucks will not be allowed in the express lanes. Both the northbound and southbound express lanes are expected to be in place through mid-October.

INDIANAPOLIS – The following restrictions and road closures are current or upcoming for the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Many restrictions listed below are dependent upon favorable weather conditions and other factors.

• I-465 between U.S. 31/Meridian Street and Allisonville Road on the north side will be shifted towards the outside lanes as work happens in the median. Three lanes will remain open during rush hours. Overnight and on weekends, up to two lanes may close in each direction for road construction. Total intermittent closures may happen for 20 minutes at a time near bridges to remove or replace beams over I-465. Stay alert for changing traffic patterns.
