SustainIndy

Mayor Ballard recognizes that environmental sustainability is a key strategy to make sure that Indianapolis continues to be competitive in a changing world. Cities that are successful in addressing these matters have found that they can:
- Deliver long-term cost savings
- Build the local economy
- Improve community quality of life
- Improve air quality and public health
These objectives support The Ballard Rules , and specifically further three key Mayoral priorities: taxpayer cost-savings, community economic development, and improving neighborhood quality of life.
SustainIndy
SustainIndy departs from the former GreenPrint Initiative in 4 Key areas, reflecting Mayor Ballard's vision for Indianapolis:
- SustainIndy is an action-oriented initiative. Planning is important, but implementation and action is what will transform Indianapolis into a more sustainable city.
- SustainIndy includes a robust structure for implementation of policy and recommendation. The Office of Sustainability has been created to allow for the aggressive implementation of sustainability policy by 3 full-time staff members working with project-based interdepartmental teams of staff from across the city.
- SustainIndy takes a public/private partnership approach to work together and seek innovative solutions which will move our community together toward a common goal. Working together in a coordinated way, we can get even more done – and more quickly - to move toward our common goal of making Indianapolis one of the most sustainable cities in the Midwest.
- SustainIndy incorporates a specific focus on Green Economic Development.
Office of Sustainability
The Office of Sustainability is designed with a bias toward action. Its focus is on long-term cost savings and integrated economic development issues. To be successful in reaching these objectives extensive interdepartmental coordination is required as well as a close working relationship with many private and non-profit partners within the community. The Office of Sustainability is the primary liaison to the City's Green Commission and will continue to work in partnership with the Green Commission to make Indianapolis a more sustainable place to live.
Within the next 12 months, the Office of Sustainability will work with City staff and the community to coordinate and catalyze such far-reaching initiatives as:
- Green Infrastructure in the LTCP
- Green Fleet and Fuel Use Reduction
- Energy Audits and Retrofits
- Recycling
- Green Building Incentives
- Green Economic Development
- Formal Public-Private Partnerships
- Center for Sustainability
- Smart Redevelopment Zone
- Green Super Bowl
- Green Infrastructure Community Projects
