Take Action at School

Since air – and the pollution found in it – is invisible, it may be hard to understand the importance of keeping our air clean. But, even if we cannot see it, we rely on air to breathe and to live our day-to-day lives.

You don't have to be a grownup to help keep Indy's air clean. Everyone has a role to play in improving Indianapolis’ air quality – even our youngest citizens can help make a positive difference. For starters, make sure the lights are off when you leave the classroom. When you decrease the amount of energy you use, you can also decrease the amount of pollution power companies put into the air.

You can also encourage your parents to carpool, take the bus, and avoid long drive-thru lines. They're all great ways to protect Central Indiana's air. But they're just the beginning...

Smart Schools Don’t Idle

Do buses and cars idle in front of your school? If they do, they're creating unnecessary pollution. Remember, kids are more sensitive to air pollution than adults because their bodies are still growing and developing. Knozone, together with Improving Kids Environments (IKE), works with students, administrators, parents and bus drivers at schools like yours to create Smart Schools.

What is a Smart School? It’s pretty simple. A Smart School promotes Idle Free Zones in and around school parking lots and drop-off/pick-up areas. These zones are free from busses, work trucks and other cars wasting fuel and creating pollution by needlessly running their engines (or, idling).

Less exhaust means less pollution. And that leads to fewer unwanted reactions like asthma attacks, itchy eyes, and burning lungs.

When your school becomes a Smart School, you can receive:

a. Idle Free Zone street signs

b. Free pens & pencils

c. Crossword puzzles, word searches and cootie catchers

d. A chance to win T-shirts and other cool prizes

e. An opportunity to have an Environmental Scientist visit your school to share fun tips on how to keep our air clean

Air Schmair

At Knozone, we love clean air. It's our thing. But we're also big-time fans of reading, and sharing helpful tips with students like you. That's why we've developed a book all about the important reasons we need air and things you can do to help keep our air clean. The book has been created for Indianapolis children from kindergarten to fifth grade, and all you have to do is download and print it out to have your very own copy.
