THE 96-GALLON TRASH CART PROGRAM

96 gallon cart1.jpgIn 2010, the City initiated the 96-gallon trash cart program to create a safer, cost efficient, and cleaner trash collection service for the residents of Indianapolis. 

BENEFITS OF THE 96-GALLON CART

  • Trash is secured from elements and from animals

  • Reduced employee safety risks that can accompany constant heavy lifting and riding of the back of trash trucks

GENERAL FAQ

1. DO I HAVE TO PURCHASE THE 96-GALLON CART?

  • The 96-gallon trash cart will be delivered to a resident's home free of charge. If a resident is in need of another trash cart along with the one provided, they may purchase an additional cart for $65. 

2. DO I NEED TO USE THE CART IN ORDER FOR MY TRASH TO BE COLLECTED?

  • Yes, all residents must utilize the trash cart services in order for the program to work efficiently for the residents and the City.

3. WHERE DO I PLACE MY 96 GALLON TRASH CART?

  • Trash carts should be placed 2-3 feet away from the curb with the arrows facing the street or alley. Please keep your cart at least 5 feet away from all objects and buildings.

4. WILL I NEED TO BAG MY TRASH BEFORE PLACING IT INTO THE CART?

  • Residents must place all trash in a 10-15 gallon kitchen size bags before placing them in the cart.

5. WHAT AM I UNABLE TO PLACE INTO MY TRASH CART?

  • Electronics and household hazardous waste that can contain reactive, ignitable, or corrosive ingredients should not be placed in the 96-gallon trash cart. Please visit indy.gov/toxdrop for more information on how to properly dispose of these types of items.

6. CAN I PLACE RECYCLABLES INTO MY TRASH CART?

  • We encourage all residents to take part in the City's recycling program. For more information on how to recycle with the City, please visit the curbside recycling and recycling  drop-off locations websites.

7. WHEN DO I NEED TO PLACE MY CART OUT TO BE PICKED UP?

  • Residents should place their carts out by 7 a.m. on their scheduled pick up day in order for their trash to be serviced.

8. DO I STILL RECEIVE HEAVY TRASH SERVICES?

  • Yes, heavy trash service will still be provided.

9. WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SPACE IN MY CART FOR ALL OF MY TRASH?

  • Loads of trash that exceed the capacity of the 96-gallon trash cart may be disposed of at the Marion County Citizens Transfer Station located at 2324 S Belmont Avenue. The transfer station is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $2 per car load and $5  per truck load.

10. CAN I PLACE EXTRA YARD WASTE IN MY TRASH CART?

  • Residents can place bags of leaves in their cart with their regular trash.

11. WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LEAF COLLECTION PROGRAM?

  • Yes, the leaf season program procedures are not affected by cart program. Please visit the City's Leaf Collection Homepage for more information

12. WHAT IF MY CART IS NOT SERVICED ON MY REGULAR PICKUP DATE?

  • If your trash is still in your cart after your scheduled service day, please contact the Mayor’s Action Center immediately at 317-327-4622.

13. WHAT IF MY CART IS STOLEN?

  • If your cart has been stolen please contact the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's non-emergency number at 317-327-3811 to file a police report. After you file this report and receive a report number, contact the Mayor's Action Center with your report number at 317-327-4622.

14. I'M MOVING. CAN I TAKE MY TRASH CART WITH ME?

  • No, trash carts are assigned to a specific address. If you are moving, you are required to leave the trash cart that was issued to your home behind so that it can be used by the new occupant.

15. I JUST MOVED TO A NEW HOUSE. HOW DO I GET A NEW TRASH CART?

  • If your house is a new construction home and you did not receive a 96-gallon trash cart, contact the Mayor's Action Center at 317-327-4622.
    If your house was previously occupied, the previous owner was required to leave the trash cart behind.
  • If a trash cart was not left behind, you must report it stolen to receive a replacement. If your cart has been stolen please contact the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's non-emergency number at 317-327-3811 to file a police report. After you file this report and receive a report number, contact the Mayor's Action Center with your report number at 317-327-4622.

16. I AM ELDERLY AND/OR HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS AND CAN'T MANEUVER A CART.

  • For residents who meet ADA requirements or have special needs and cannot use a 96-gallon cart, smaller carts will be available.

17. WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR ADA TRASH COLLECTION?

  • With ADA trash collection services a walk-up service will be provided if a resident meets the requirements and needs assistance moving their cart. Please contact the Mayor's Action Center at 327-4622 if you require this service.

18. I LIVE IN A CONDO. WILL I BE AFFECTED? 

  • Unless otherwise notified, all condo occupants will receive a 96-gallon trash cart.
