Board of Waterworks

The Board of Waterworks was first established in December of 2001by Mayor Bart Peterson, City-County Council President at the time, Beurt SerVaas, and Minority Leader at the time, Rozelle Boyd.  The board is responsible for overseeing the Indianapolis Water Company (IWC) that was purchased by the City of Indianapolis.

The City-County Council created the board to oversee the operation, management and budget of the Indianapolis Department of Waterworks, the body that was created to receive IWC's assets once the purchase was completed.

By ordinance, the board consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor. The President of the Council nominates three members to the Mayor.  The Minority Leader of the Council also nominates three members to the Mayor. Once the Mayor receives the nominations, he then has the discretion to appoint those nominees. The Mayor then nominates a seventh Board member for approval by the Board.  All will serve staggered terms ending in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

The Mayor and City-County Council started to purchase IWC when its parent company, NiSource was forced to sell it due to federal law. The purchase kept a major corporate headquarters, hundreds of jobs and customer assistance in Indianapolis and staved off a rate increase for the year 2003.

Meetings for the Board Of Waterworks are held on a monthly basis at the City-County Building.  Start time is usually 5:00 pm but this is subject to change.  See our Calendar for exact dates and room numbers for upcoming meetings.

Of the seven board members that hold office, four members, exclusive of the Secretary Treasure, must be present in order for a quorum to be held.

These monthly meetings are open to the Public.
