Indiana State University alum, The Honorable Maggie A. Lewis earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health Education and Master’s Degree in Public Administration after graduating from Columbus East High School.  Since graduating from Indiana State she has solely dedicated her career towards serving the public and those in need.  She serves as president of the Indianapolis City-County Council and is the first African American woman in council history to hold this position.
When she’s not leading the Indianapolis City-County Council, Lewis serves as the Executive Director of the Dove Recovery House for women. Founded in 2000, Dove Recovery House for Women is the largest half-way house in Marion County that provides supportive, transitional housing for women who are recovering from substance abuse.
In 2008 President Lewis joined the Lafayette Square Area Coalition (LSAC) and their efforts to re-brand the area into an International Marketplace. Without hesitation, President Lewis agreed to chair the first “A World of Difference: An International Parade.” She also chaired the second annual “Taste the Difference”.
President Lewis is very involved in several efforts to better our community. She serves as a member of the Eagledale-Lafayette Square Area Weed and Seed Steering Committee/Co-Chair of Weed Committee and the Lafayette Square Area Coalition.  She was a founder of the Pike Township Combat Committee, which provides a free weekend retreat to women service members returning from duty overseas’ and is involved with the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Disabilities, the Pike Township Board for Beautification and Economic Development, the LSAC Board, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., LINKS, Inc. and Mount Paran Church Usher Board and community outreach ministry.  She is married to Indiana State University alum, Leroy Lewis, III and they are the proud parents of Leroy Lewis, IV.
