INDIANAPOLIS – The Council’s special Indianapolis Marion County Law Enforcement Consolidation Committee met today to consider the first phase of moving forward on consolidation of the Indianapolis Police Department (IPD) and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD). The question before the Committee was, should consolidation of IPD and the MCSD go forward.
Indianapolis Marion County City County Council President Steve Talley urged the committee to vote to move forward with consolidation. President Talley said, "We will go forward to determine whether effective protection or the provision of police services can be had by consolidation and whether consolidation is in the best interest of the citizens of our City and County."
The political resolve is to now tell the law enforcement professionals, Council members and the Mayor to design the best possible police department for all of Marion County.
President Talley said "this is an important step towards full consolidation of departments and services throughout the County including consolidation of the fire departments. The consolidation of law enforcement is an important step in this direction" He said "I am confident that the consolidation will result in the most effective, efficient and accountable police protection and services for our community."
