Satellite voting a reality in Marion County
Marion County voters have more opportunity, flexibility to vote absentee this fall
“Every year, voters may vote absentee before Election Day in the County Clerk’s office,” said County Clerk Beth White, who also serves as the Election Board’s secretary. “Thanks to a great deal of bi-partisan effort and support, the Election Board expanded this opportunity today by adding two more early voting locations for this fall’s election. Now registered voters in Marion County have more convenient and flexible ways to vote early if they can’t make it to the polls in November.”
State law allows a county election board to adopt a resolution authorizing the Circuit Court Clerk to establish satellite offices in the county where voters may case absentee ballots. The resolution adopted today provides for two satellite absentee voting locations – one in Washington Township and the other in Perry Township. This resolution applies only to the 2008 general election cycle.
The two sites chosen by the Election Board are the J. Everett Light Career Center located at 1901 East 86th Street and the Southport Community Center located at 6901 Derbyshire Road. Hours of operation for both sites are Thursday, October 23 through Sunday, November 1 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, including the weekends.
In addition to these two sites, early voting begins in the Marion County Clerk’s office located in the City-County Building on Monday, October 6. Hours of operation at the downtown location are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend hours at the downtown location will operate the same as the two satellite locations: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on October 25, 26 and November 1, 2. The last day to vote early is Monday, November 3 from 8 a.m. to noon at the downtown location only.
Marion County voters can choose any of the three satellite sites prior to Election Day to cast an absentee ballot for November’s election. To vote early, registered voters must complete an absentee application, which are available on-site. They must also present a valid, government-issued photo I.D. before they are permitted to complete an absentee ballot.
