Clerk White kicks off fifth cycle of yVote!
Program aimed at encouraging a lifetime of voting in young people
INDIANAPOLIS – Marion County Clerk Beth White has kicked off the fifth cycle of yVote!, a program aimed at educating and preparing young people for a lifetime of civic engagement. The yVote! program consists of a brief presentation covering election basics and the opportunity to complete and cast a mock ballot on the county’s actual voting equipment. Launched in the fall of 2008, Clerk White has visited 21 public, private and charter schools and registered more than 1,500 eligible students to vote.“I really enjoy working with young people to prepare them for a lifetime of voting,” Clerk White said. “Over the years, we’ve have reached out to a number of schools and received tremendous feedback. I look forward to continuing our efforts to encourage students to be active in our democracy.”In Indiana, young people who will be 18 on or before November 8, 2011 are eligible to register to vote and participate in May’s primary election. The Election Board is required to print a special 17 year old Democratic and Republican ballot, which contains most candidate contests but excludes contests or questions where the final outcome is decided in May (i.e. school board races and public questions). In other words, 17 year olds can vote in races on the primary election ballot to nominate candidates for November’s general election.
