Research has shown that furthering one's education lessens the chance for reoffending. Toward this end, the Department has developed an in-house education program which focuses on providing on-site literacy level instruction and GED classes for probationers. The literacy classes are taught by our Program Coordinator, Cathy Johnson, who utilizes a variety of tools, including one-on-one tutoring, computer software, and life skills programming, to improve the student's reading abilities. Through a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), GED classes are conducted four nights per week by IPS teachers. The Department is fortunate to have a full computer lab to enhance the learning environment.
