Training Coordinator, Joel Schumm 327-3955 Assistant Trainer, Robert Kodrea 327-3994
The Training Division of the Marion County Public Defender Agency has been established in order to create a supportive environment for Agency members to meet the challenges faced in our common goal of representing indigent clients. This challenge shall be met by providing legal and support staff with orientation training, continuing legal education, trial skills and job training, mentoring opportunities, research resources, and ongoing evaluation and feedback.
The Training Division shall be dedicated to improving the overall agency product and the quality of representation to indigent citizens.
SPRING INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Marion County Public Defender Agency in downtown Indianapolis seeks law student interns for the spring of 2009. The Agency employs more than 140 full-time lawyers and 100 part-time lawyers who represent indigent defendants in criminal, juvenile, mental health, and appellate proceedings.
Interns will participate in litigation first-hand, talking with clients and witnesses, assisting lawyers in preparing for trials and other proceedings, and researching and writing motions and briefs. Interns will have an opportunity to work on a variety of projects with different lawyers, although special efforts will be made to ensure interns spend at least part of their time working in their particular area(s) of interest. Students who have completed 45 hours of law school and taken professional responsibility (legal ethics) are eligible to be certified to practice law under the supervision of an Agency lawyer. Those interested in a career in criminal defense are encouraged to apply, although any student interested in litigation will find the experience invaluable.
Internships are unpaid, but students may be eligible for law school credit or stipends through programs at their law school. Internships are expected to commence the first week of January and last for at least twelve weeks. Interns may work full or part-time.
Please email a current resume and unofficial transcript, to Robert Kodrea, Training Coordinator, at rkodrea@indygov.org. Applications must be submitted no later than December 4th at 5:00 p.m.
