Legal Surveys

A special type of boundary survey defined in Indiana Code

The following indexes (indices) are mainly but not entirely for surveys performed by the Marion County Surveyors and Deputy Marion County Surveyors in the 1800’s when large tracts of ground were divided for various reasons.  Legal surveys are still performed today although much more rarely.

Please note that in addition to any pages of the Township Legal Survey Books noted herein, surveys in adjoining sections can also affect the common section lines.

The Marion County Surveyor’s Office is pleased to announce that the Legal Survey and Road Record books have been scanned and can now be provided digitally by email or on CD.  Many property corners in Marion County were established by legal surveys in the 19th century.  Our office has perpetuated many, but not nearly all, of these non-GLO corners.  Normal copy fees apply.
