General Disability Tips and Resources

  • There are attorneys who specialize in their practice in assisting individuals who have been denied on their application for Social Security Disability.

  • That State of Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services are available to all individuals with a disability regardless of income.

  • Individuals who have been receiving Medicaid for two consecutive years are eligible for Medicare benefits after at that time.

  • Veterans may be eligible for benefits they are not aware of –check it out with your local VA representative.

  • The Information and Referral Network, Inc. is a comprehensive directory/referral service for human services for Central Indiana. They can be contacted for information at no fee by calling HELPLINE (926-4357).

  • Social Workers in your local hospital are a good source of information on resources in your community.

  • Individuals may be eligible for emergency financial assistance through their local Township Trustee if they meet their application guidelines. Contact your local trustee for more information.

  • Mental health services/counseling services/substance abuse treatment are not available only to the poor or wealthy. Many of the community mental health centers and private providers will work out financial arrangements or have sliding scale fees. Contact your local providers for more information.

  • Indiana Medicaid recipients have transportation available to medical appointments at no charge. Contact your local Medicaid office or caseworker for more information. You must use Medicaid approved providers for this service.

  • Transportation to medical appointments is available to individuals by a number of agencies in Central Indiana. Contact the HELPLINE for a listing of these agencies. You will need to make arrangements with these agencies well in advance of your appointment.

  • CICOA The Access Network works with persons 60 and older and persons with disabilities of any age who need assistance in their home to remain living independently. These services may include: case management, social services, home delivered meals, transportation, homemaker assistance, health services. Income limits may apply, and there is a limited amount of funding in each county. An application is required. CICOA The Access Network has a number of offices to serve the Central Indiana area. In other counties it is referred to as the Agency on Aging.

  • Individuals are encouraged to contact their local/state/national elected officials to discuss any concerns regarding services available to the disabled or insurance coverage for those services.

  • If you think you may be eligible for Social Security Disability, apply as soon as possible for SSD. You may be entitled to back benefits and the amount of benefit you receive is based on your income from past work.

  • There are numerous community support groups available to individuals family members/caregivers of people with disabilities. A complete listing is published in the Indianapolis Star regularly, and copies are available by contacting their office.'

  • Disabled individuals and their family members/caregivers/significant others who are successfully handling their life can be a wonderful support to newly diagnosed or injured individuals. Volunteer your time to help others through this difficult process. Contact a local rehabilitation facility or human service agency to see how you can help!

  • Central Indiana Township School Corporations offer community education/continuing education courses at reasonable prices!

  • That it is illegal to park in the striped area next to a handicapped parking space.

  • That many cities are providing audible sounds with their pedestrian crossing signals to assist blind pedestrians.

  • BVIS Blind and visually Impaired services: Telephone 1-877-241-8144 Call this number to inquire about services for persons who are coping with vision loss.

  • HELPLINE: Telephone 926-HELP or 926-4357 When you need help and are not sure of where to turn, try the helpline. Provides a comprehensive information and referral service of the human service agencies in Central Indiana.

  • Relay Indiana: Telephone 1-800-743–3333 Provides telephone relay services for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speed disabled. Trained relay agents complete all calls and stay online to relay electronic messages.

  • 613-FLEX or 613-3599 If you need to get to work near the airport or Park 100 areas or need to travel along 86thstreet, try Indygo's 613-FLEX. They may be able to accommodate you.

  • Wishard Advantage: Telephone 630-6029 Provides free health and dental care for persons who meet income requirements.
