 Septic Tank Elimination Program

To address health hazards in our neighborhoods, the city is actively working to convert many neighborhoods on septic systems to the city's sanitary sewer system.

Since 2006, more than 3,000 high-priority homes have been converted to city sewers, under the Septic Tank Elimination Program (STEP).

From 2009 through 2013, the city of Indianapolis is committed to bringing sewers to more homes on septic systems per year than any time in the city's history. As a part of STEP, the city will bring sewers to approximately 7,000 homes, which will address more than 25 percent of the 26,000 homes still on septic systems in Indianapolis.
